1981 Chrysler Newport.jpg

Chrysler Newport (R-body). 1979–81 (prod. n/a). 4-door sedan. F/R, 3682 cm³ (I6 OHV), 5210, 5898 cm³ (V8 OHV). Chrysler downsizes top end by shifting full-size Newport nameplate on to R-body platform, a derivative of the intermediate B-body (Plymouth Fury and Dodge Monaco), and creates a boxier, more contemporary (by 1970s’ standards) look. A lot lighter than predecessor—to the tune of 800 lb—but still not that economical, with six delivering a claimed 17 mpg. Largest 360 in³ dropped after 1980. Not very successful thanks to Chrysler’s financial troubles around the time, and inferior to competitors from Ford and GM. Deleted in 1981.

Manufacturing locations: Windsor, Ontario, Canada; Detroit, Michigan, USA

Marque: Chrysler | Model: Chrysler Newport | Predecessor: Chrysler Newport (1974–8) | Successor: Chrysler New Yorker (1982)

q.v. Dodge St Regis, Plymouth Gran Fury (1980–1)
