Chrysler Cordoba. 1975–9 (prod. 666,553). 2-door coupé. F/R, 318, 360, 400 in³ (V8 OHV). Effectively a B-body (e.g. Plymouth Satellite (1971–4)) coupé with a restyle making it look more upmarket, designed to capture slice of personal–luxury market occupied by Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Pontiac Grand Prix. Developed as Plymouth, but Chrysler had more upmarket potential—making it a “small” Chrysler by 1970s’ standards. First models before 1978 facelift considered fairly good-looking by American Chrysler standards, promoted with memorable campaign by actor Ricardo Montalbán, who purposely pronounced Córdoba in the Anglicized way (‘fine Corinthian leather’ is still quoted from the TVC). Strong sales for first three years; dropped dramatically thereafter. Usual 1970s touches such as opera windows optional, as was 300 package recalling earlier Chrysler letter-series cars. Thirsty and too large certainly by its last model year, though it still has plenty of fans. Twinned with Dodge Charger (1975–8).
Marque: Chrysler | Model: Chrysler Cordoba | Successor: Chrysler Cordoba (1980–3)
