Originally a trim level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, Malibu became its own line in 1978 with GM’s downsizing in the wake of the fuel crisis. The nameplate was briefly retired in the 1980s as Chevrolet focused on its front-drive Celebrity, but it was revived in 1997 and has remained the staple mid-sized vehicle in the company’s range since. In 2011, GM brought the Malibu and the Daewoo Tosca replacement on to the same platform and, with growth in the Far East, launched the new model at Auto Shanghai. That model launched in China and Korea first, with US sales following in 2012 as 2013s. A sixth-generation Malibu appeared for the 2016 model year.
