1987 Chevrolet Cavalier RS Wagon.jpg

Chevrolet Cavalier (J-car). 1982–94 (prod. 4,020,771). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon, 2- and 3-door coupé, 2-door convertible. F/F, 1835, 1999, 2196 cm³ (I4 OHV), 2835, 3097 cm³ (V6 OHV). Highly successful American version of international J-car project, with more body styles than other nations. Sedan, wagon and coupés initially for 1982 model year. Small 1·8 for 1982 only. Fuel injection from 1983, V6 from 1985. Simple front end with narrow, horizontal grille for first two model years; squarer, quad-headlamp look resembling more expensive Cadillac Cimarron from 1984, the year the convertible was introduced (though not continued through all model years from that point). Restyle in 1988, when three-door coupé dropped; two-litre deleted in favour of 2·2 in 1990. Another restyle for 1991, bringing the range in line with larger Chevrolet Lumina (1990–4), but only minimal changes thereafter. Basic transportation and, by the 1990s, very unrefined with questionable build quality versus other small (by US standards) cars, with fuel economy and low price two its few virtues.
