1991 Chevrolet Caprice.jpg

Chevrolet Caprice. 1991–6 (prod. 634,000 approx.). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/R, 4312, 5001, 5733 cm³ (V8 OHV). Rebodied version of “downsized” models from 1977, with swoopier, more modern styling influenced by the Ford Taurus Mk I. Still body-on-frame construction, and same wheelbase as before (115·9 in) but two inches longer and wider for the sedan, and 200 lb heavier (3,907 lb). Wagon was three inches longer than sedan, weighing 4,354 lb—both increased in weight to the end of the run. New dashboard, airbag, rear seat belts, anti-lock brakes on début. More sporting LTZ trim from 1992. However, styling not universally favoured, with critics saying Caprice looked heavy. A refresh came for 1993, with rear wheelarch opened up on sedans, but sales’ decline continued as buyers went to more modern cars. Smallest 4·3 from 1994, but it developed more power than the 5·0 (200 hp v. 170 hp); dash redesigned that year to accommodate passenger airbag. D-pillar redesigned for 1995. GM noticed buyers were going to trucks if they wanted size, and the Caprice was consigned to history after the 1996 model year, as far as North American buyers were concerned—for now.
