Former Alfa Romeo and Ferrari engineer, Giotto Bizzarrini, formed his own company in 1964, following his pivotal role in the development of the Ferrari 250 GTO. initially contracted to develop the [Lamborghini]] V12 engine and Iso Grifo, Bizzarrini decided to develop a supercar bearing his own name.

Bizzarrini SpA launched the P538 5300 Strada, which was heavily based on the competition Grifo A3C. Bizzarrini car production continued until 1969, but Giotto continued working as an automotive consultant, producing prototypes and building replica P538s.
