Originally the cheaper Bentley counterpart to the [[Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit]], Mulsanne began the brand’s renaissance, especially with a turbocharged version from 1982 to 1985 that recalled the Blower Bentleys. Eventually, other Bentleys took over the basic Mulsanne shell, such as the Eight and Brooklands, which were produced till the late 1990s. Bentley, under [[Volkswagen]], revived the name with a model announced in 2009, replacing the models developed from the Arnage in the 1990s. The new Mulsanne is similarly seen as a new beginning for the brand, as the first top-of-the-range model developed under its German owners.

Initially a cheaper Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, turbocharged model (1982–5) attempted to recall performance heritage and ‘Blower’ Bentleys. Modern Bentleys probably owe their existence to the Mulsanne: thanks to the turbo, Rolls-Royce began seeing the brand’s cachet again. Fuel injection from 1986; S from 1987 to 1992 had no turbocharger, but some of the Turbo’s trim details. Heavy car, bought for those wanting a fast, luxurious saloon. Turbo R effectively replaced Mulsanne Turbo in 1985; Brooklands took over Mulsanne’s role. Basic [[Bentley Eight]] spawned off this line in 1984.
