BMW 840i/BMW 840Ci/BMW 850i/BMW 850Ci/BMW 850CSi/Alpina B12 (E31). 1989–99 (prod. 31,062). 2-door hardtop coupé. F/R, 3982, 4398 cm³ (V8 DOHC), 4988, 5379, 5576 cm³ (V12 DOHC). Elegant pillarless two-door coupé succeeding the original 6er, with Cd of 0,29 and the first V12 to be mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Despite weight (850i at c. 1,800 kg) from the luxury equipment, making the 8 a grand tourer rather than an out-and-out sports, plenty of power, though V12s expectedly thirsty. However, that power wasn’t easily on tap with the electronic throttle, the automatic transmission was lazy, and the car had relatively soft suspension. Improvements during the run, including a far better-handling 850CSi. A handful of prototype 830i models were built, and 24 were hand-built in South Africa.

Manufacturing locations: Dingolfing, Niederbayern, Germany; Rosslyn, South Africa
