BMW’s executive saloon family, originally so named as it was the fifth series of car since the company’s renaissance after the Isetta era. Launching in 1972, the 5er was designed by Paul Bracq with a fairly timeless style, ensuring its shape would remain fairly unchanged for a decade and a half. The car became known for excellent handling and, by the third-generation model, a certain elegance, something that could not always be said for other BMWs. The fourth generation is still remembered by some as an all-round BMW, with beautiful styling and excellent dynamics, while the fifth generation is considered one of the better balanced designs among the often-criticized work from Chris Bangle, BMW’s group design director. As of 2008, over five million BMW 5ers have been made.
