BMW 2800 CS/BMW 3·0 CS/BMW 3·0 CSi/BMW 3·0 CSL/BMW 2·5 CS (E9). 1968–75 (prod. 30,546). 2-door coupé. F/R, 2492, 2788, 2985, 3003, 3153 cm³ (I6 OHC). Neue Klasse-based coupé taking the basic form of the 2000 Coupé, but with more purposeful front end and six-cylinder engines. The 2800 CS appeared first, more of a grand tourer than the 2000; twin-carb 3·0 CS from 1971 with 180 PS (10 PS more than the 2800). Fuel injection and higher compression with 3·0 CSi, taking power up to 200 PS. Good low-end torque and effortless, smooth sixes. Practical dashboard, comfortable seats, excellent build quality. CSL (Coupé Sport Leicht) for homologation, BMW Motorsport’s first product, made with thinner steel, no trim and soundproofing, aluminium alloy doors, bonnet and bootlid, and Perspex side windows. Initially with 2985 cm³ with 180 PS for 1971–2, then bored to 3003 cm³ in late 1972 with 200 PS. Displacement increased again for 1973 to 3153 cm³ with 206 PS, the last version available with an aerodynamic package, earning it the Batmobile nickname in Germany. Fuel crisis special, the 2·5 CS, from 1974, with 150 PS (874 made).
