BMW 116d/BMW 116i/BMW 118d/BMW 118i/BMW 120d/BMW 120i/BMW 123d/BMW 125i/BMW 130i/BMW 135i/BMW 1M (E81/E82/E87/E88). 2004–13 (prod. over 1,000,000). 3- and 5-door saloon. 2-door coupé, 2-door convertible. F/R, 1596, 1597, 1995 cm³ petrol, 1995 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC), 2979, 2996 cm³ (I6 DOHC). Ungainly looking hatchback range, but with much smarter coupé variant recalling the likes of the BMW 2002 Tii, and a convertible for entry-level glam. Excellent roadholding and handling throughout the range, even the base models, while twin-turbo 135i and 1M (not M1) coupés were potent performers, though still refined. Rear-wheel drive meant the boots were robbed of space—on this count, the 1er couldn’t beat the Volkswagen Golf V. Mid-term refresh 2007. Three-door introduced after refresh, then coupé; convertible a year later. Five-door production ended 2011, three-door in 2012, remainder in October 2013.
