Compact range slotting under BMW 3er-Reihe, initially with rear-wheel drive. Hatchback bodies at first, then coupé and convertible for the first generation. Second-generation 1s enlarged and along similar themes, but coupé and convertible were replaced by the BMW 2er-Reihe. A third-generation model was developed on a front-drive platform and initially launched in China. The German third generation, on a development of that same platform, appeared in 2019.
