Austin Freeway 6.jpg

Austin Freeway 6 (ADO40). 1962–4 (prod. under 30,000 incl. Mk II and Wolseley 24/80). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/R, 2433 cm³ (I6 OHV). On a tight budget, BMC Australia took the fight to the American manufacturers dominant in Australia with their sixes. The base was the Austin A55 Cambridge Mk II hull, considered narrow for the market. B-series engine had two extra cylinders added on, rear axle moved as far back as possible to increase interior room. Plenty of standard equipment (heater–demister, padded dashboard) to counter the limited interior space; structural upgrades for the local conditions, and larger, 14-inch wheels.

Manufacturing location: Australia

Marque: Austin | Model: Austin Freeway | Successor: Austin Freeway Mk II
