Big Alfa, far more successful than predecessors such as the Alfa Sei and Alfa 90. Part of Tipo Quattro programme with Fiat, Saab and Lancia. Released later than the others and shared less in terms of appearance. Last to be developed before Fiat purchase; last Alfa to be sold in North America. Styling by Pininfarina and far better quality than earlier big Alfas. Called 168 in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia as 164 had negative connotations. Mid-life facelift 1993, with four-wheel drive Q4 model that year. Platform used for limited-edition Zagato-designed Alfa SZ.
