Alfa Romeo 156.jpg

Alfa Romeo 156. 1997–2007 (prod. 680,000 approx. to 2005). 4-door saloon, 5-door estate. F/F, F/A, 1598, 1747, 1969 cm³ petrol, 1910 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC), 1910 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 2387 cm³ diesel (I5 OHC), 2387 cm³ diesel (I5 DOHC), 2492, 3279 cm³ (V6 DOHC). Very attractive, sporting mid-sized range, with sexy curves replacing straight edges of 155. Walter de’Silva styling, with influences from Alfas of old. Low Cd of 0,31. Deeply scalloped dashboard and upper console. Alfa 156 was the first in the modern era to adopt concealed rear-door handles, a look copied by other cars. DOHC petrol engines with variable valve timing, and common-rail diesels, mostly willing units; good grip and handling, though ride a bit harsh. Well appointed. Sportwagon from 2000. Mid-term facelift, by Giugiaro, in 2003. A real contender against other premium cars in this class, though service typically not as good as what the Germans offered.

Manufacturing location: Pomigliano d’Arco, Napoli, Italy

Marque: Alfa Romeo | Predecessor: Alfa Romeo 155 | Successor: Alfa Romeo 159

q.v. Alfa Romeo GT (937)
