American Motors Javelin. 1968–70 (prod. 96,000 approx. for 1968–9). 2-door coupé. F/R, 232, 252 in³ (I6 OHV), 290, 343, 390 in³ (V8 OHV). AMC’s pony car, with more room than the comparable Ford Mustang (it had an extra inch in the wheelbase), and a lower base price. Designed by Richard Teague, with his typical clean look. Nash engines at base with three-speed manual transmission; SST was the go-faster package. Mild facelift for 1970, the year in which a homologation Mark Donohoe Special was offered (2,501) along with c. 50 Trans-Am SSTs. Also spawned short-wheelbase AMC AMX.
