From AutocadeTaking a name from Opel for the same market sector, Holden in Australia sold Nissan Pulsar-based models in two generations to complement its three-box Gemini, fighting the Ford Laser hatchbacks. The second generation had Holden powertrains. The Astra went on hiatus from 1989 to 1996 as Holden fielded the Toyota Corolla-based Nova, but the name returned on rebadged versions of the Opel Astra. The name disappeared briefly again after the fifth Astra, based on the Opel Astra H, and returned only on the Astra J coupé in 2015. By 2016, Holden fielded an Astra five-door again as the K was announced, succeeding the Daewoo Lacetti-based Cruze. For 2017, the Astra nameplate also extended to the third-generation Cruze, in four-door sedan form.
