Autocade is an international car cyclopædia that’s geographically unbiased, carefully edited for enthusiasts and media who want a quick, accurate reference. There is a greater emphasis on models produced after 1970.

Inside Autocade

BMW i8

2014 BMW i8.jpg

BMW i8. 2014–20 (prod. n/a). 2-door coupé, 2-door roadster. F/F, 7·1, 11·6 kWh–R/R, 1499 cm³ electric–petrol hybrid (I3 DOHC). Second of BMW’s i cars, a dramatic, head-turning coupé. Desirable with strong performance and excellent fuel economy, unlike some of the earlier nods to hybrid technology by other manufacturers. Low Cd of 0,26. Twin-turbo three-cylinder unit at rear driving rear wheels, electric motor driving front ones, totalling 362 hp; lightness allowed i8 to hit 100 km/h in 4·4 s. Adjustable suspension limited body roll, but some understeer remained. Token rear seats: not really a 2+2.

Manufacturing location: Leipzig, Sachsen, Germany

Marque: BMW

Subaru Impreza (GJ)

2014 Subaru Impreza.jpg

Subaru Impreza Sport/Subaru Impreza G4 (GJ2/GJ3/GJ6/GJ7/GP2/GP3/GP6/GP7/GPE). 2011–16 (prod. n/a). 4- and 5-door sedan. F/F, F/A, 1599, 1995, 2457 cm³ petrol, 1998 cm³ diesel (F4 DOHC). Fourth-generation Impreza, with hatchback dubbed Sport and notchback dubbed G4. Ran alongside third-generation WRX initially, and spun off crossover model, XV. Longer wheelbase (25 mm increase), better outward visibility. Boxer engines again, with more power and better fuel economy. Good, roomy all-rounder, but some engine and road noise. WRX now its own line.

Manufacturing location: Japan

Marque: Subaru | Model: Subaru Impreza | Predecessor: Subaru Impreza (GE) | Successor: Subaru Impreza (GK)

Toyota Mark X

Replacement for Mark II, which had been going since the 1960s. Toyota found itself with dropping sales in the Mark II and Chaser market, prompting a rethink. Mark X was sportier and higher quality, using the Crown platform; however, it was well priced. The new line worked, and Mark Xs were even sold in China as the Toyota Reiz, as the company focused on selling big cars there. The Mark X Zio, meanwhile, used the same model name, but was in fact a crossover based on the Toyota Auris platform.

Marque: Toyota | Predecessor: Toyota Mark II
