First real departure from Volvo’s boxy era, replacing the very upright S70 saloon. Volvo’s idea was to have its estate cars as separate model lines, but build the saloons on the same platform. Therefore, the complements to the V70 estate were the S80 saloon on the larger side, and the S60 on the smaller, set to rival the BMW 3er-Reihe. It never managed to take on the BMW convincingly, though it was a solid enough contender in the junior executive market. The second-generation model, released in 2010 after Ford sold Volvo to Geely, was sportier in appearance, yet had the Swedish marque’s typical commitment to safety, débuting a new pedestrian detection system that could stop the car (at slower speeds) if someone walked out in front. In a departure from the first generation, there was a V60 estate complement. A third generation, brimming with tech, appeared in 2018, manufactured in the US.
