Volkswagen Golf (1H/1HX). 1991–2001 (prod. 4,800,000 approx., incl. 164,234 Cabriolet). 3- and 5-door saloon, 5-door estate, 2-door cabriolet. F/F, F/A, 1391, 1595, 1598, 1781, 1984 cm³ petrol, 1896 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1984 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 2792, 2861 cm³ (V6 OHC). Golf evolves for the 1990s, heavier and with more creature comforts. Longer wheelbase, longer overall, and wider, but similar formula (Macpherson struts at front) and looks. VR6 introduced as range-topper in an attempt to capture the spirit of the original GTI. Variant estate introduced in this generation. Hatchbacks replaced 1997, Variant 1999. New cabriolet finally with this generation, built from 1993 to December 2001, with a 1998 facelift to make it resemble Golf IV more. Notchback saloon called Vento this time.
