VAZ 2121 Niva (ВАЗ-2121 Ни́ва)/Lada Niva/Lada 4×4/Lada Niva Classic/Lada Niva Legend. 1977 to date (prod. n/a). 3-door UV, 3- and 5-door LWB UV. F/A, 1499 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 1568, 1690 cm³ petrol, 1905 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). First Lada that departed from being a licensed Fiat, the result of a project instigated by the Soviet Union for a useful off-road vehicle in 1971, and originally developed under Vladimir Solovyev. Unibody, but with 265 mm ground clearance and independent coils at front and a five-link rear axle at rear. Capable of gradients nearing 60 per cent and 600 mm water depths. Launched with 1·6; larger 1·7 and Peugeot diesels from 1994. Niva name dropped in 2006 under GM, becoming the Lada 4×4, but returned in 2016. Updated in 2009 with new clutch, improved brakes, and upgraded suspension from the Chevrolet Niva. Modernized Urban from 2014. Facelift in 2020, with new interior, Legend tag added in 2021.
