At the time, thoroughly modern—even futuristic—and made the 911 look old hat, but the 911 proved irreplaceable and outlived the 928. First production Porsche with a V8. More refined and luxurious than earlier Porsches. Very capable, with strong acceleration; advanced rear suspension with what Porsche dubbed the Weissach link. S from 1980, with larger V8, with the original model ending production in 1982. S4 replaced S in 1987, with five-litre, 32-valve DOHC engine, and Cd of 0,34. GT from 1989, and all models replaced by GTS in 1992, with 5·4-litre V8.
