Peugeot 504. 1968–2006 (prod. 3,671,635, other source lists 3,771,556). 4-door saloon, 5-door estate. F/R, 1657, 1796, 1838, 1971 cm³ petrol, 1948, 2112, 2304 cm³ diesel (I4 OHV). Tough-as-boots, Pininfarina-styled saloon, débuted at Paris Salon in 1968, with coupé and cabriolet (listed separately) shown the following year at Genève. All-disc brakes, refined, and well built, with plenty of wheel travel for comfortable ride. Scooped the European Car of the Year award for 1968–9. Larger engines in 1970, the same year estate was launched, with seven-seat Familiale models. Fuel crisis model, 504L, announced 1973, with live rear axle; larger diesel in 1976. European production to 1983 (prod. 3,073,185), but 504s continued in Kenya and Nigeria (the last left Nigerian production in 2006), and commenced production in China (where the pick-up was built to 1997). Argentinian models at Sevel lightly restyled in 1987 (number plate moved at rear) and more substantially facelifted in 1991 (with new rear lights, part of a horizontal “strip”, running till 1999), but was the only version that had substantial changes; African ones largely stayed the same, save for new bumpers and trim externally.
