Peugeot 206 (T21). 1998 to date (prod. 6,848,214 to beginning of 2011). 3-, 4- and 5-door saloon, 5-door estate, 2-door coupé–cabriolet. F/F, 1124, 1360, 1587 cm³ petrol, 1398, 1868, 1997 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1360, 1587, 1997 cm³ petrol, 1560 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC). Belated direct replacement for 205, with styling by Gérard Welter and Murat Gunak. Not as fun to drive as predecessor, with handling and ride softened, though Peugeot did try to reclaim some of the 205 GTI’s pizazz with RC 180 hot hatch. Reasonably well built supermini, though there were complaints of ill-fitting roofs for 206 CC, the smallest hardtop convertible out of Europe (offered 2001–7). Lesser models had good fuel economy though the smallest engines were lacking, and interiors were average. SW (station wagon) from 2001, SD notchback saloon by Iran Khodro from 2005. Faux off-road estate in Brazil called Escapade. Peugeot 207 took over most models in 2006, with 206 remaining as a budget model, later facelifted to become 206+ in France (and 207 in Malaysian and some South American markets).
