If you trace the lineage, Altima is the successor to the long-running Nissan Bluebird line. It began as the US-market name for the Bluebird (U13), before the L30 model débuted for the 1998 model year with unique sheetmetal, though it was clearly based around the then-current, but far boxier, Bluebird (U14) in Japan. The sporting intent of the California-styled L30 was quite clear from the styling; Bluebird, meanwhile, had gone conventional in the Japanese market. The L31 departed more from Bluebird origins in 2002, sharing a platform with the Teana (J31) and the Maxima (A34) but with its own styling and no direct equivalent outside North America. A new model, including a coupé, was launched for the 2007 model year. By 2012, the Altima replaced the Teana in many countries.
