1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham 4-door hardtop.jpg

Mercury Marquis/Mercury Marquis Meteor. 1973–8 (prod. n/a). 4-door sedan, 2-door coupé, 4-door hardtop sedan, 5-door wagon. F/R, 302, 351, 400, 429, 460 in³ (V8 OHV). Much the same theme as before, with floaty ride and minimal steering feel. Heavier and longer, the latter thanks to US federal rules on bumpers; thirstier thanks to emissions’ controls. Absorbed Monterey line from 1975, when standard Marquis took on the base full-size role. Slight improvements to suspension for 1977 and 1978. Essentially the upmarket counterpart to the Ford LTD (1973–8). Canada still had its Mercury Meteors (Rideau 500 and Montcalm) as the lower-priced base models in the full-size range for much of this period, but from 1977, these were officially the Mercury Marquis Meteor, absorbed into the Marquis range.
