Mercedes-Benz 190/Mercedes-Benz 190E/Mercedes-Benz 190D (W201). 1982–93 (prod. approx. 1,800,000). 4-door saloon. F/R, 1996, 1797, 2298, 2299, 2498, 2463 cm³ petrol (I4 OHC), 2597 cm³ (I6 OHC), 1997, 2199 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 2497 cm³ diesel (I5 OHC) Mercedes-Benz embraced aerodynamic design for its first postwar foray into the C-sector of the market, with design director Bruno Sacco producing a clean and handsome new mid-market saloon. It was an excellent scaling down of its S-Klasse (W126 saloon) into a perfect BMW 3-series-rivalling package. Hugely important landmark car for its maker, laying down the C-Class, which is a mainstay of the range to this day. Excellent build quality, relaxed ride and performance from original 2-litre line-up of petrols and diesels. Cosworth-developed and spoiler-clad 16V models in 2·3 and 2·5-litre form have attracted an enthusiast following. Mild facelift in 1988 ushered in six-cylinder and turbo diesel models, which addressed the rather pedestrian acceleration.
