F/R, 2746 cm³ (I6 DOHC), 2996, 2998 cm³ diesel (I5 OHC), 3449 cm³ diesel (I6 OHC), 3818, 3839, 4196, 4973, 5549 cm³ (V8 OHC). Revolutionary S-Klasse for the 1980s, more aerodynamic (Cd 0,36), fuel-efficient and with ABS as standard on 500 SEL (optional on other models till 1986, when it became standard throughout range). Traction control standard. Driver’s-side airbag optional from 1981, standard from 1985. Mid-term revisions 1985. The 300SD was aimed at the US market. Most popular S-Klasse to date and, apart from a few limited issues, a very reliable series.
