1966 Lincoln Continental.jpg

Lincoln Continental. 1966–9 (prod. 177,939). 4-door sedan, 4-door convertible, 2-door coupé. F/R, 460, 462 in³ (V8 OHV). Continental departs from 1961 look, gaining five inches in length, and an inch in height and width. More squarish nose, with Continental letters across the hood for 1966–7. Introduction of two-door coupé, a rival to the Cadillac Coupé de Ville, helped boost sales to a record high for 1966. Largest engine for the Continental introduced for 1966: a 462 in³ unit developing 340 hp. New AM radio with tape system introduced. Convertible cancelled after 1967 model year, the last four-door convertible offered by a major US manufacturer, due to softening demand. Drop in sales for 1967 due to stronger competition and introduction of four-door Ford Thunderbird (1967–9). Smaller, but smoother, more modern and more powerful 460 in³ introduced during 1968 model year, when Continental script removed from hood and front turn signals wrapped around the front fenders again. Continental letters on the hood returned in 1969 with yet another facelift, but sales continued to drop.
