From AutocadeJaguar E-type. 1961–8 (prod. 38,419 approx.). 3-door coupé, 3-door LWB coupé, 2-door roadster. F/R, 3781, 4235 cm³ (I6 DOHC). Legendary coupé, one of the most exciting débutantes of 1961, and capable of 140 mph and possibly 150 mph (though how standard was the one tested by Motor which achieved this feat?). Considered one of the most beautiful cars of the era. New independent rear suspension designed by Bob Knight. Triple-carb 3·8 XK carried over from XK150S, developing 265 bhp and reaching 60 mph in 6·9 s. No synchromesh on first till 4·2 appeared in 1964. Better torque from newer engine, mated to Jaguar gearbox. The 2+2, from 1966, was longer by 9 in, and taller, spoiling the looks to some eyes, with optional automatic. A few Series 1s were produced with open headlights, previewing Series II; the last models (1967–8) were unofficially “Series 1½”, with twin Zenith–Stromberg carburettors instead of triple SUs, twin cooling fans, adjustable seats, different switches, and, outwardly, open headlights.
