Holden Commodore/Holden Berlina (VT). 1997–2000 (prod. 303,895 all VT). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon, 2-door utility. F/R, 3791 cm³ (V6 OHV), 4987, 5665 cm³ (V8 OHV). Rethink of Commodore line, based around latest Opel Omega B (GM2800) platform. GM invested heavily (A$600 million), recognizing that Australia needed to have as unique a car as possible. Developed with US market in mind, possibly as a Buick, till UAW opposition led to the cancellation of the plan, forcing Holden to look for other left-hand-drive export opportunities. Consequently sold as Chevrolet Omega in Brazil and Chevrolet Lumina in the Middle East. Lumina tag also used for South African exports; Commodore in most other countries. US plan change saw to cost-cutting to bring VT within smaller budget parameters, losing control links to Opel rear suspension and some trim. Suited most buyers well as a large family car with reasonable equipment; wagon cavernous, built around company car requirements (suiting particularly Telstra, a big Holden customer). V6 OHV carried over but supercharged V6 found its way into sporting models. V8 for S, SS and Berlina; mid-term changes in 1999 saw larger V8 (5·7 litres) installed instead of 5·0.
