1974 Ford Gran Torino.jpg

Ford Torino/Ford Gran Torino. 1972–6 (prod. 1,807,518). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon, 2-door hardtop coupé, 2-door fastback coupé. F/R, 250 in³ (I6 OHV), 302, 351, 400, 429, 460 in³ (V8 OHV). Body-on-frame intermediates, roughly the same size as before, but far heavier as Ford went for the “road-hugging weight”. Less practical and economical, especially with the high waistlines, thick C-pillars and swoopy shape. Trunk smaller than it appeared. Smooth ride on American motorways, at least until one hit a bump. Gran Torino denoted top models. Shorter wheelbase for coupés; fastbacks for 1972 and 1973 only. Opera windows available on coupé from 1974. Sales dropped markedly for 1975, probably because of the Ford Granada (1975–80). The 1975–6 coupé gained fame in the TV series Starsky & Hutch. A twin to the Mercury Montego (1972–6) and spun off the Ford Elite for 1975.
