Ford Mustang (SN95). 1999–2004 (prod. n/a). 2-door coupé, 2-door convertible. F/R, 3797, 3883 cm³ (V6 OHV), 4601 cm³ (V8 OHC), 4601, 5408 cm³ (V8 DOHC). Ford’s New Edge styling themes affected Mustang, which got a more aggressive look. New rear suspension for regular Mustangs, while Cobra got independent rear suspension. The same engine choices as 1998, with DOHC reserved for Cobra. Thirty-fifth anniversary models in 1999. Split-port induction for base V6, raising power to 190 bhp, later 193 bhp. Larger V6 from second half of 2004. OHC V8 developed 260 hp. Limited-edition SVT Cobra R in 2000, with 5·4 V8 and 385 hp, and independent rear suspension. Bullitt special edition in 2001, and 300 hp Mach I special editions in 2003 and 2004, both with Cobra 4·6 DOHC but with new cylinder heads. Upgrade available for Ford’s centenary during the 2003 calendar year. Cobra V8 developed 390 hp in 2003 and 2004, with supercharging, and again had independent rear suspension. In 2004, all Mustangs donned a 40th anniversary badge. Still a very firm ride and good handling, as with the 1994–8 models.
