1990 Mercury Capri.jpg

Ford Capri (SA30). 1988–94 (prod. 66,382). F/F, 1597 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Called Ford Capri in its country of manufacture, but originally destined for US market and first shown in Australian press as a Mercury. Majority of production exported in that guise. Intended to be a Mazda Miata-beater, but delays (attributed to the Australian factory needing to get its quality right) meant that by the time the Capri was released, the Miata was already established. Ghia styling dated poorly compared with Mazda, which was a corporate cousin anyway. Engines from Mazda, developing 100 hp or 132 hp with turbocharger (some lag and torque steer). Interior designed by ItalDesign. Media reports post-launch still suggested quality problems and leaks with the roof, though these were remedied quickly by Ford. Final models, including XR2 and Tickford versions, more sporting and styling more resolved, along with handling.

Manufacturing location: Campbellfield, Victoria, Australia

Marque: Ford | Model: Ford Capri | Predecessor: Mercury Capri (1979–86)
