Fiat 124. 1966–75 (prod. 1,280,000 to 1972). 4-door saloon, 5-door estate. F/R, 1197, 1438 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1438, 1592 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Practical, quick range, with all-disc brakes, and European Car of the Year for 1967. Boxy, modern shape for the time, better proportioned than 125. Fancy Special and Special T had larger engines: the Ts had the twin-cam DOHC units. Italian production to 1974, licensed to Kia of Korea (1970–5), which built facsimiles of the original as the Fiat–Kia 124. The Soviet Lada was the most famous remake, but was more primitive under the skin (see VAZ 2101 and VAZ 2102 for the starting-points); also made at Tofaş (Murat 124 and Serçe), Premier (118 NE and 1.38 D) and SEAT. Spawned coupé and Spider.
