Audi A3 (Typ 8L). 1996–2006 (prod. 900,000 approx.). 3- and 5-door saloon. F/F, F/A, 1595 cm³ petrol, 1896 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1781 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Premium version of Volkswagen Golf, on same platform, but with tidier, cohesive Audi styling. Rewarding to drive, built to good quality. Rival to BMW 3-series Compact of this period. European production ceased 2003; continued in Brazil to 2006.
